Black Gold Flakes at the A. G. Leventis Gallery
The artwork Black Gold Flakes by Efi Spyrou was installed on the A. G. Leventis Gallery’s façade on 16 May, on the occasion of the International Day of Light and International Museum Day, because the ‘Museum is Light’! It is now exhibited in the Contemporary Hall inside the Gallery.
It is woven from black fabric absorbent tapes and yellow reflective tapes. Reflective tapes are usually placed on moving vehicles; the reflection of light makes the object visible in the dark. The fabric, quiet and static, is activated through the movement of light on its surface, inviting the viewer to participate.
Once the reflective surfaces are struck by light, the work is transformed into a flaming, glaring and vibrant object that inspires the spectator. ‘Lightplay’ is the result of an active dialogue between the artwork and the viewer, the artist and the object, the artist and the viewer; and between the bearing organism (the Leventis Gallery shell), the born organism (the artwork) and the participating organism (the viewer).
The work addresses the concepts of movement and pause, light and darkness, through its own structural elements, through what initially appears to be a subtractive approach and through the engagement it arouses.
